5Rights Conducts Youth Juries Across the UK

In January 2017, 5Rights and academics from Leeds and Nottingham universities launched ‘The Internet On Our Own Terms: How Children and Young People Deliberated About their Digital Rights’ at the House of Lords. The report was the culmination of an unusual initiative in which young people aged between 12-17, gathered together to participate in a series of jury-style focus groups designed to ‘put the internet on trial’. In total, nine juries took place which included 108 young people.

What emerged most strongly was the critical need to put the voices of children and young people at the centre of all technological and policy responses to ensuring that the digital environment is fit for childhood. The report can be read here, and the Open Educational Resource is now available here.
